Shooting jewelry -especially sliver, platinum, and diamonds- on a white background can be a real challenge; however, it's all the rage on the Web, so you've got to be able to do it.

The problem with using a pure white background is: nothing can appear brighter than the background itself. So, bright white objects (like platinum, silver and diamonds) that need to show detail often look dull and lifeless against a pure white background... but not always.
